Secrets and Suitors by Joanna Barker
Nora has been in love with her childhood friend and neighbor for years. Unfortunately, he does not return her feelings. Since it is her third season, her father takes matters into his own hands. He arranges a marriage to a man that Nora finds uninspiring. Unless she can persuade her father to accept a better match by the end of the season she’ll have a bleak future indeed.
After reading several regencies that focused on heavy social issues it was a delight to read this compelling relationship drama. Barker makes this regency feel fresh with well-drawn characters that you can’t help but cheer on. This one was unputdownable and I spent a long afternoon ignoring other chores to finish it. Perfect escape read to curl up with now that fall has brought us cooler weather.
Something I also loved was the interior book design. The opposing pages at the beginning of each chapter has a beautiful block image of these wildflowers. It was fun to doodle butterflies or bees above them to give them the tiniest pop of color.
