Lady Elizabeth Davenport disguises herself as a maid and flees to America to accept a housekeeping position in order to escape a forced marriage. She meets Lord Barton, who sees through her disguise. His friendship provides her with the advice and comfort she needs to survive her journey across the Atlantic and prepare for her new life. When Elizabeth arrives in America and takes up her new position she discovers that Lord Barton is her new employer and he’s not so happy about the situation.
I loved this book! Elizabeth has absolutely no clue what sort of life she’s thrown herself into or the challenges she’s chosen by running away from her sheltered English life. But her reckless courage in the face of the unknown gives this book the feel of an adventure novel. I loved how this novel took us on many journeys from the Philadelphia slums to great aristocratic houses in England. This book was a nice read to escape into and put the writer Jen Geigle Johnson on my must-read author list.
