Deborah Prophetess of God by H.B. Moore

Thanks to the folks at covenant for giving me the change to do this review. I usually really enjoy H.B. Moore’s novels about women in the scriptures but this one, while a convincing historical, wasn’t one of Moore’s best novels in my opinion.  First, I think Moore does beautifully writing concrete descriptions that make the setting and time-period come alive. Second, she does make Deborah an interesting, practically mythical character. The first sequence where she takes on a lion and defeats a band Canaanites is the stuff of legend. I also love the scene where Deborah is trying to kill …

All Hearts Come Home for Christmas Novella Collection

Thanks to the folks at Covenant I got the chance to review this excellent novella anthology. As you can see below, I had so much fun reading it and doing little illustrated designs for each of the title pages. Covenant wants to invite everyone to the LIVE facebook launch party tomorrow September 10 6-8pm MST. They are also hosting a giveaway. Don’t forget to enter at the end of this post! So, I’m long-time Sarah M. Eden fan but sometimes these novella anthology things don’t have stories that feel as satisfying as novel-length stories, but wow, this novella is so …

A Lady’s Maid by Jen Geigle Johnson

Jen Geigle Johnson is a relatively new writer in the market having published her first novel The Nobleman’s Daughter (currently on sale for $ 1.99) with Covenant in 2017. I haven’t read anything of hers until I was given this opportunity to review A Lady’s Maid.   A Lady’s Maid has a lot of strengths in that it brings to life a compelling historical time period, has a themes everyone can root for (women’s rights), and has an interesting cast of characters. I  sometimes found the writing quality uneven because of minor craftmanship things. When the story lacks tension because the …

Secrets Never Die by Laurie C. Lewis

Long-time author Laurie C. Lewis (Author of historical fiction series Freeman and Dreamers) has published her most recent novel SECRETS NEVER DIE this July with Covenant Communications. Departing from her more recent romance titles, SECRETS NEVER DIE’s main draw is the governmental conspiracy suspense plot. The reader instantly roots for the emotionally neglected and intelligent Tallie Brown as she sets off to solve the mysteries of her mother’s life in a small town in Virginia.  I had a more difficult time sympathizing with Jackson James at first. The circumstances surrounding the demise of his journalistic career didn’t make him a …

The Heart of a Vicar by Sarah M. Eden

I adored this latest installment in the Jonquil Family series. There are so many ways in which, as a fan of these characters, the book was just perfect, but at the same time the book left me asking big questions. The main character, Harold Jonquil or often affectionately (and sometimes not so affectionately) called “Holy Harry” starts the novel as a well-meaning, but emotionally paralyzed Vicar. His heart is in the right place but his head is constantly evaluating every action he makes and comparing it to what he thinks a Vicar really ought to be. Obviously, he is ever …
